The honest answer

Plants do not dampen sound. The felt behind them does.

Artificial plants absorb virtually no sound. That is why we mount our moss walls as standard on 10 mm acoustic felt made from recycled PET bottles. Need it quieter? Then we build a bespoke acoustic lining wall, with a cavity behind it. That way you combine greenery for the eye with calm for the ear.

How much does it dampen?

Choose the build-up. See the absorption.

The sound absorption of a wall is expressed as αw: from 0 (everything is reflected) to 1 (everything is absorbed). According to ISO 11654, this corresponds to a class from A to E.

Good to know

Everything about acoustic green walls.

Artificial plants themselves hardly absorb sound. An acoustic green wall from Coolplant does: the planting is mounted on sound-absorbing felt made from recycled PET bottles, and for extra absorption we build a bespoke acoustic lining wall.

More questions and answers
  • About acoustic green walls
  • Green walls that sound good

A green working environment creates calm, lowers blood pressure and improves performance. What more could you want? Well, how about better acoustics!

(Artificial) plants absorb virtually no sound and therefore do little to improve acoustics. So acoustic plants do not exist in the world of artificial plants either. That is why Coolplant supplies green walls and panels combined with sound-absorbing materials.

The sound-absorbing construction behind our green walls and moss panels is made from recycled PET bottles. That way, we improve more than just the acoustic environment.

  • Improve acoustics with plants

You still sometimes read online that acoustic plants exist: plants that absorb a lot of sound and are therefore sound-dampening. That is a myth. Plants do scatter sound a little, but not enough to absorb sound pressure effectively. To create a sound-dampening effect with plants, you would have to fill the entire room with greenery. So when people say they improve acoustics with plants, they do not mean sound-absorbing plants, but special sound walls with acoustic felt on which plants are mounted.

  • Sound absorption

The sound absorption of a material is expressed as an absorption coefficient or absorption value. Every material has its own absorption value for each pitch (frequency). With basic constructions, Coolplant has the right solution for every situation.

The graph shows the absorption values of the four basic constructions. Absorption may vary slightly depending on the type of moss and the plant finish you choose.

  • Examples

For our sound-absorbing walls and dividers, we use special acoustic boards that are incorporated into the wall. This black board made from recycled material creates a beautiful dark background for the planting and absorbs incoming sound.

Acoustic green dividers can also interrupt disturbing sounds, such as sound travelling from a consultation room towards the waiting area.

  • Improve acoustics in the office

Office staff are usually not exposed to noise above the legal sound limits. Even so, people in the office can still experience noise nuisance. A rattling printer, ringing phones and a steaming coffee machine may not be the loudest sounds, but they can still cause irritation. Add to that the fact that a conversation between colleagues quickly reaches around 60 decibels, and it is certainly worth improving office acoustics with sound-absorbing materials. After all, noise nuisance can lead to higher blood pressure, reduced concentration and stress.

  • Moss or plant wall with sound absorption

Make your working environment green and improve acoustics at the same time. Acoustic green walls from Coolplant combine visual appeal and sound comfort for an optimal working environment.

  • Acoustic partition walls in the office

A partition wall with plants creates more calm and a pleasant working environment. Thinking of acoustic plants? Then look in particular at acoustic partition walls for the office. They are not only pleasing to the eye, but also offer all the benefits of a green partition wall with artificial plants, such as the blood-pressure-lowering effect of plants, which helps reduce stress in the office. With acoustic partition walls, mental overload caused by noise gets no chance, and employees enjoy an even more pleasant working experience.

  • To measure is to know

You can measure the acoustics of a room, or calculate them in advance for a new situation. In complex situations, achieving the perfect result sometimes requires those measurements or calculations to be carried out by an acoustic consultancy. That consultancy determines exactly how much material is needed and where.

As an artificial plant wholesaler Coolplant does not carry out acoustic surveys itself, but works with specialised consultancies for this, such as Het GeluidBuro.

  • Frequently asked questions
  • Do acoustic plants exist?

No. Plants do scatter sound a little, but not enough to absorb sound effectively. If you want to improve acoustics with plants, you need a sound wall with acoustic felt on which the plants are mounted.

  • How does a green wall improve acoustics?

Behind our green walls and moss panels is a sound-absorbing construction made from recycled PET bottles. That absorbs the sound; the planting makes it look good.

  • How much sound does an acoustic green wall absorb?

That depends on the construction. The graph on this page shows the absorption values of our four basic constructions. Absorption may vary slightly by type of moss and planting.

  • Can the acoustics be calculated in advance?

Yes. In complex situations, we have measurements or calculations carried out by a specialised acoustic consultancy, such as Het GeluidBuro. It determines how much material is needed and where.

  • Is an acoustic green wall fire-retardant?

Yes, in a fire-retardant version. Our fire-retardant planting and our artificial moss have been tested to EN 13501-1 (Euroclass B-s2,d0). We will send you the certificate on request.
